The Story of OBUT

In Saint-Bonnet-le-Château in 1955, Frédéric Bayet, a manufacturer of locks, changed jobs with the help of Antoine Dupuy, a talented mechanic, to make playing bowls. Together, they registered the Obut trademark.

In 1958, the founders enlisted the help of the Souvignet family (Jean the father, and his two sons, Georges and Robert) to enable the company to develop more rapidly.
At the time, the Souvignets, who also lived in Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, were masters of the art of making telescopic forks for mopeds.
In the early 1960s, the vogue for pétanque started.
Building on their experience in metalworking, the Souvignet brothers and their partner Antoine Dupuy embarked enthusiastically on this new venture.
Thus was born “La Boule Obut”.
Industrial solutions for manufacturing boules were devised, and machines specially designed by Antoine Dupuy were introduced.
La Boule Obut became the industry standard, synonymous with quality.
In 1981, La Boule Obut became a limited company. From 1981 to 1993, Robert Souvignet was CEO, and Antoine Dupuy was the technical director.Pierre Souvignet is now CEO, and André Dupuy is technical director
Their commitment to the company’s values has stood the test of time, proving that their belief in success was well founded. The family, good humour, healthy competition… these are the values of pétanque on which Obut has been built... to last.
